Microsoft ditches MSN/Live Messenger in favour of SkypeIt's official, Microsoft will retire their instant messenger service and replace it with Skype. The current Live Messenger service will be 'turned off' by March 2013*. Microsoft bought Skype 18 months ago for £5.3bn. Currently Messenger has more than double the number of users that Skype has. Presumably Microsoft is going to try and move these people over to Skype before they jump ship to another IM service like AIM, WhatsApp or Google Talk. To ease the transition Skype have a tool to transfer contacts and merge accounts. * Excludes China 15th December 2008: Windows Live Messenger 2009 v14 (v9.0) released.15th February 2008: Windows Live Messenger 8.50 final released. 5th September 2007: Windows Live Messenger Beta 2 released. Microsoft announced that their new version of Microsoft's IM Client Messenger would not be going from v8 to v9.0 as expected. Instead Windows Live Messenger 2009 is now at version 14.0. This brings it inline with the other Windows Live programs. Download Windows Live Messenger - 2009 If you have Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista then there's no reason why
you shouldn't be using the new Windows Live Messenger 2009. |
